Volvo Cars has announced an expanded partnership with Google to accelerate the rollout of new Android Automotive OS innovations, including the integration of Google’s next-generation AI, Gemini, into Volvo vehicles with Google built-in.
Revealed at Google I/O 2025, the collaboration makes Volvo one of Google’s reference hardware platforms for future in-car Android development. This means Volvo vehicles will be among the first to receive the latest Android features and updates, placing them at the forefront of automotive software advancements.

“With Volvo as a lead development partner, we’re excited to speed up innovation and enhance the connected car experience,” said Patrick Brady, Google’s Vice President of Android for Cars. He noted that the partnership sets new industry benchmarks and enhances the in-vehicle experience for Volvo drivers.
The upcoming Gemini integration, which will replace the current Google Assistant in Volvo cars later this year, promises more intuitive, natural voice interactions. Drivers will be able to compose and translate messages, access user manuals, and gather destination details using conversational language. The aim is to reduce distractions and cognitive load, contributing to safer, more focused driving.

Alwin Bakkenes, Volvo’s head of global software engineering, highlighted the importance of the partnership in delivering user-centric innovation. “We are working closely with Google to shape the future of connected cars by integrating advanced capabilities from the world’s leading consumer ecosystem directly into our vehicles,” he said.
The partnership is expected to deliver faster software updates, improved AI-powered services, and a more seamless digital experience for drivers. It also reinforces Volvo’s commitment to smart, safe, and human-focused mobility solutions.
