BYD has declared that it will assume direct management of its Australian operations, taking over from EVDirect as the national distributor of its passenger vehicles, as reported by CarSauce. The transition is set to take place in July 2025, at which point BYD Australia Pty Ltd will function as both the importer and distributor of the brand.
Since its launch in 2022 with the introduction of the Atto 3, EVDirect has overseen the distribution of BYD passenger vehicles across Australia and played a key role in promoting the brand nationwide.

Reports indicate that the decision aligns with BYD’s broader strategy of establishing a factory-backed distribution network. It also supports the Chinese automaker’s plan to introduce its Denza premium sub-brand later this year, which was designed to operate independently of EVDirect. Additionally, the shift is expected to bolster BYD’s confidence in its Yangwang brand as the company continues testing the market in Australia with multiple U8 SUVs.
Following the transition, BYD will maintain its retail presence, with approximately 91 experience and service centers across Australia. Additionally, the brand will establish a new partnership with Eagers Automotive, one of the nation’s largest dealership groups.

EVDirect will not be entirely excluded from BYD’s operations, as the company has joined forces with Eagers Automotive to create a joint venture, EV Dealer Group Pty Limited, that will continue overseeing BYD outlets.
BYD has surpassed 50,000 EV sales in Australia and aims to repeat the success this year with its six-model lineup. The range includes four BEVs—Atto 3, Dolphin, Seal, and Sealion 7—alongside two hybrids, Sealion 6 and the Shark, a standout ute in the market.
