FORVIA, a global leader in automotive technologies, and Smart Eye, a pioneer in human insight AI for vehicles, have unveiled the world’s first in-car biometric authentication system using iris and facial recognition. The breakthrough was showcased at Auto Shanghai in April, marking a major advancement in secure and personalized in-vehicle experiences.
The new technology uses the existing Driver Monitoring System (DMS) camera to perform strong biometric authentication through iris and face recognition, eliminating the need for additional hardware. This enables seamless and secure functions such as in-car payments and user identification for accessing applications through FORVIA’s growing Appning platform, which already features more than 200 apps across 32 car brands from 13 OEMs.

Cynthia Li, Strategy Vice President at FORVIA, highlighted the significance of the innovation, noting that it enhances the user experience and opens up new opportunities for in-car applications. “We are excited to showcase this world-first technology at Auto Shanghai and demonstrate how it can transform the automotive industry,” she said.
Detlef Wilke, Vice President of Innovation and Strategic Partnerships at Smart Eye, emphasized the efficiency of leveraging existing systems: “By combining iris and facial recognition, we can support features like in-car payments and personalised access without adding complexity to the vehicle architecture.”

The collaboration began with a technical partnership in 2021 and evolved into a strategic alliance in 2023. This latest development, the result of focused and fast-paced joint efforts, is ready for RFQ (Request for Quotation) and signifies a step forward in integrating AI-driven, secure, and personalized experiences within the automotive sector.
