GAC Group has announced that its all-electric Pickup 01, first revealed as a concept at the 2025 Shanghai Auto Show, will enter mass production and hit global markets in 2027. Developed under the GAC New Energy Commercial Vehicle brand, the Pickup 01 marks a key step in the company’s ‘One GAC 2.0’ globalization strategy, targeting overseas markets such as Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, and Mexico.
The model is envisioned as an ‘all-domain pickup truck,’ designed for both daily commuting and rugged off-road use. Built on GAC’s in-house GAIA (GAC Adaptive Intelligent Architecture) platform, the Pickup 01 can dynamically adjust its suspension, power output, and driving mode to suit diverse terrains and driving conditions. It also features a futuristic, mecha-inspired exterior design with large tires, high ground clearance, and integrated through-type headlights and taillights.

Inside, the vehicle offers a dual-mode intelligent cockpit capable of adapting to environments ranging from construction sites to glaciers and city roads. The interior mirrors the vehicle’s exterior theme, highlighted by red accents and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Key innovations include an advanced driver assistance system, digital side mirrors, and hidden door handles.
The move aligns with broader trends in China’s commercial vehicle market, which produced 3.805 million units and sold 3.873 million units in 2024, with pickups, buses, and new energy commercial vehicles all showing year-on-year growth. Exports of Chinese commercial vehicles surpassed 900,000 units last year.
Although pickup trucks have faced regulatory constraints in China due to their classification as light commercial vehicles, they are becoming a major growth segment for Chinese automakers. According to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), 62,000 pickup trucks were exported in the first quarter of 2025, up 31% year-on-year, making up 45% of total pickup sales.
